2-Point Perspective

Grade 8 Art Project

INSPIRATION

One art piece that had aspects within for inspiration was this work. The medium chosen for the piece was charcoal, and was drawn on paper, 12"x 24". It is a college student-made creation. Several takeaways I’ve acquired from the art would would be the use of cylinders and focus. It is clear all cylinders have holes within them due to the use of shadowing. This factor was used also in my final piece. Second, it is clear the artwork uses the size of each geometrical shape to manipulate focus. The first form the audience sees would be the rectangular structure with three circular holes. This factor could also be seen within my final piece.

The first picture to the left is one of the other artworks that inspired me. The second to the left would be a fragment of my final piece. The inspiration example is a simplistic 2-point perspective artwork shared online by an anonymous user. Cubes of different sizes are placed among each other, with clear lighting and shadows. A similar can be seen within my final piece as my evidence of inspiration.

This historically-old work is named “The Marriage Contract” (c.1743 - c.1745) by William Hogarth, an artist known for using a two-point perspective. Although the points are out of the picture, the horizon is clear and vivid as the painting displays a crowded room. The color palette is overall lively and diverse, a potential inspiration for my painting process.

CONCEPTS

FINAL

My final piece was overall unsatisfactory to a certain extent. It was felt that there was a need for more organic shapes, and aspects from practice sketches were quite lacking. It is clear potential for more creativity was not portrayed inside the artwork. There could’ve been more objects (items that are not purely geometric or simplistic), for instance, the watermelon piece drawn on Sketch 7. I also believe that the color scheme of the work does not have issues, but the arrangement is disoriented. Specifically, it was most likely a flawed decision to place the color purple (pipes) after the placement of yellow and orange, and would’ve been more harmonized when placed among the bluish-purple cubes.

Nevertheless, several positive aspects of the piece would be clear and mostly accurate lighting and shadow depictions, recognizable horizons, and shape arrangement. Watercolor is accurately used to depict shadows for them to look 3D, the horizon line is drawn out, and shapes harmonize quite well.
